BREAKTHROUGH PRIZE: FUNDAMENTAL PHYSICS

This century is likely to produce more surprises. From the Planck length to the cosmic scale, physicists are opening windows into the deep structure of reality. The Breakthrough Prize in Fundamental Physics was founded in 2012 by Yuri Milner to recognize those individuals who have made profound contributions to human knowledge. It is open to all physicists — theoretical, mathematical, experimental — working on the deepest mysteries of the Universe.

There are three main sub-categories of the Breakthrough Prize in Fundamental Physics:

  • The Breakthrough Prize in Fundamental Physics recognizes major achievements, with special attention to recent developments. One Breakthrough Prize in Fundamental Physics is given each year. The winner receives The prize can be split between two or more scientists.
  • The New Horizons in Physics Prize is targeted toward junior researchers. Recipients of the New Horizons Prize will generally be no more than 12 years past their PhD. Exceptions will sometimes be made, especially in cases of experimental projects with long lead times. Each year, up to three New Horizons in Physics Prizes are awarded.
  • In exceptional cases a special Breakthrough Prize in Fundamental Physics can be awarded at any time (Special Prize in Fundamental Physics), forgoing the nomination process.
