Intellectual Property Rights, be it patents or copyrights, play an important role in all academic activities. The ALLEA Permanent Working Group Intellectual Property Rights, which has been in existence since the 1990s, has prepared and issued reflections, declarations and recommendations on the most challenging topics of IPRs. At present it is developing a horizon-scanning mechanism to identify emerging issues and suggest appropriate solutions.

Current topics

1. Access to scientific information
2. Intellectual Property Rights and the European Commission Framework Programme
3. The “Community Patent”; issues of concern for the scientific community
4. The “Digital Agenda” and Intellectual Property Rights issues
5. Patenting in stem cell research and other areas of cutting edge biotechnology
