The purpose of the group is to ensure that the interests of the Arts, Social Sciences and Humanities within the member academies of ALLEA are appropriately represented in the scope, organisation and funding of the EU research and innovation programme Horizon 2020, which will run from 2014-2020. In achieving that purpose the Group engages in consultation with the Academies and relevant EU institutions.

Current programme of action

The programme of action for the Group will include:

(1)    To engage with the European Institutions, particularly the European Commission, on the development for Horizon 2020’s Work Programmes;

(2)    To identify and deliver actions to influence the wording of Horizon 2020’s 2015 and 2016-17 Work Programmes, so that they fully take on board the needs of the Humanities and Social Sciences;

(3)    To produce regular updates for member Academies and for the ALLEA Board on progress in achieving the objectives of the Group and also to identify instances in which member Academies may wish to work in their national contexts;

(4)    To consider the position of the Humanities and Social Sciences in Horizon 2020’s successor framework programme, and their position in advising policy in Brussels.

The Group will review its mandate around the time of ALLEA’s 2015 General Assembly.
