VALUES IN TRANSITION: AN INTERGENERATIONAL DIALOGUE ON RESEARCH ASSESSMENT REFORM

A 2026 ALLEA General Assembly Satellite Event

Values in Transition: An Intergenerational Dialogue on Research Assessment Reform, co-organised by ALLEA as part of the CoARA Boost project, and the Global Young Academy (GYA), is a 2026 ALLEA General Assembly Satellite Event that brings together early career researchers and established scholars for an open and structured exchange on the values, priorities, and expectations that shape contemporary research assessment.

As momentum for reform of research evaluation grows globally, differences in lived experience across career stages can influence how research excellence, equity, and impact are understood and operationalised. This dialogue-focused event creates space to surface both divergent perspectives and shared concerns, recognising that generational viewpoints are shaped by distinct incentive structures, career pressures, and institutional realities.

Through facilitated discussions, participants will reflect on which values should be central to research assessment systems, how current models support or undermine these values, and where meaningful convergence is possible. Particular attention will be paid to identifying pathways towards more holistic, inclusive, and state-of-the-art research assessment approaches that support high-quality research while enabling fair career progression, diversity, and societal impact.

By fostering mutual understanding across career stages, the event aims to contribute to more coherent and future-ready research assessment reform grounded in dialogue, trust, and shared responsibility.

The workshop takes place in-person at the Staszic Palace, Warsaw. Capacity is limited so we encourage you to register early. The organisers reserve the right to accept/decline participation.

Senior Scientist, ETH Zurich; Executive Committee Member, Global Young Academy

Carina Geldhauser is a senior scientist (Associate Professor) at ETH Zurich and member of the Global Young Academy. She conducts fundamental research on mathematical models for phenomena in physics and biology and cross-disciplinary research in machine learning. The “applied” side of her work includes CO2 pollution monitoring, digital manuscriptology and reliable AI. As a trained philosopher and theologian, she works and publishes also on the pressing questions of our time in ethics of technology, i.e., AI ethics.

Dr. Geldhauser serves as a member of the executive committee of the Global Young Academy and European Women in Mathematics. She previously was a member of the executive board at the German Association for Junior Professors, Studies Without Borders and the International Mathematics Masters.

Dr. Geldhauser contributes to science policy and diplomacy, serving in the Coalition for Advancing Research Assessment (CoARA). She is an expert advisor to the UN Secretary General’s Scientific Advisory Board (UNSAB). She is a passionate science communicator and editor of the Oberwolfach Snapshots series. Her engagement for diversity in science was awarded several prizes.

Professor Marcin Palys

Chair, The Polish General Council for Science and Higher Education; Steering Board Member, CoARA

Professor Marcin Pałys graduated from the University of Warsaw (M.Sc. in Chemistry) and received his doctoral degree from the University of Twente (Enschede, the Netherlands, 1992). In 2010 he became a Professor in the University of Warsaw. His field of expertise covers electrochemistry, in particular transport phenomena and modelling in electrochemical systems.

Between 2012 and 2020, Prof Palys served two terms as the rector of the University of Warsaw and became closely involved in national debates on research and higher education reforms. In 2019, he joined the Board of European University Association (EUA), and since 2025 serves as Vice-president of EUA, contributing to, among others, works on innovation and career assessment. Since 2024, he is a member of the Steering Board of the Coalition on Advancing Research Assessment (CoARA). In Poland, since 2022, he chairs the General Council for Science and Higher Education, a representative institution of the sector and an advisory body for public authorities in the area of legislative changes.

Between 2020 and 2024, Professor Palys was also a member of the Governing Council of Magna Charta Observatory in Bologna.

Dr Mathijs Vleugel

Head, Helmholtz Open Science Office; Chair, CoARA National Chapter Germany

Dr Mathijs Vleugel is the Head of the Open Science Office of the Helmholtz Association, Germany’s largest research performing organisation. After completing his PhD in Biochemistry at Utrecht University, he worked as a scientific editor at Springer Nature and as a scientific policy officer at the European Federation of Academies of Sciences and Humanities (ALLEA). During his time at ALLEA, he coordinated the 2023 revision of the “European Code of Conduct for Research Integrity” and contributed to science policy statements at the intersection of open science, research integrity, and research assessment.
In his current role, he supports the Helmholtz Association, its 18 research centres, and the broader scientific community in driving the cultural transformation towards open science. The Helmholtz Open Science Office shapes and guides a unified Helmholtz-wide approach to open science through developing and harmonising policies, monitoring progress, supporting sustainable digital infrastructures, rethinking incentive mechanisms, and fostering community-building. Mathijs currently also serves as coordinator of the German National Chapter of the Coalition on Advancing Research Assessment (CoARA).
