ALLEA Announces Date and Theme
for 2024 General Assembly in Berlin

ALLEA is delighted to announce its general assembly in Berlin on 22–23 May 2024, celebrating the organisation’s 30th anniversary. The central part of the event, a public symposium themed ‘European Research Collaboration in a Shifting Geopolitical Landscape: How Open Can We Be?’, will take place on 22 May from 18:30 – 20:30 CEST at the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities, followed by a festive reception. The event is co-hosted by the German National Academy of Sciences – Leopoldina, the German Young Academy – Die Junge Akademie, and the Union of the German Academies of Sciences and Humanities.

Professor Fabiola Gianotti, CERN Director-General and laureate of the 2023 ALLEA Madame de Staël Prize for Cultural Values, will receive the award and deliver a keynote speech. Following the keynote, a high-level panel discussion will bring together distinguished experts from the realms of research and policy to address challenges posed by geopolitical complexities on cross-border research collaboration and their impact on the freedom of scientific research.

Additionally, delegates of ALLEA Member Academies are invited to an internal business meeting in the morning of 22 May 2024, followed by a joint program with delegates from Europe’s Network of Young Academies (ENYA) in the afternoon. On 23 May, Science Advice for Policy by European Academies (SAPEA) will organise two workshops for academy delegates, focusing on academy collaboration in scientific advice and promoting diversity, inclusiveness, and Early/Mid-Career Researchers’ involvement in scientific advisory bodies.

Registrations for the ALLEA General Assembly in Berlin will open in early 2024.
