Webinar: Ethics and Integrity for AI in Research

How can we promote the ethical use of AI? How might AI be used to advance fundamental values and commitments in science-related research and communication? And how can research practices in this new digital environment be assessed?

These are the questions that the upcoming webinar, organised by the Scientific Advice Mechanism in partnership with ALLEA and the Coalition for Advancing Research Assessment (CoARA), will address. This webinar draws on the recent advice adopted by the Group of Chief Scientific Advisors (GCSA) of the Scientific Advice Mechanism (SAM) at the request of Margrethe Vestager (Executive Vice-President for A Europe Fit for the Digital Age) and Iliana Ivanova (Commissioner for Innovation, Research, Culture, Education and Youth). The resulting two reports focus on the question ‘How can the European Commission accelerate a responsible uptake of Artificial Intelligence in science (including providing access to high-quality Al while respecting and promoting European research values) in order to boost innovation and prosperity, strengthen the EU’s position in science, and ultimately contribute to solving Europe’s societal challenges?’.

This webinar will bring together leading European experts to examine the promises and challenges of AI for research and communication, and will look for new ways to advance an ethical and innovative future for research and education in Europe.

The webinar will feature a panel of speakers, including Maura Hiney (Chair of the ALLEA Permanent Working Group on Science & Ethics), Francis P. Crawley (Co-Chair and Coordinator of the CoARA Working Group on Ethics and Research Integrity Policy in Responsible Research Assessment for Data and Artificial Intelligence (ERIP)), Barbara Prainsack (Chair of the European Group on Ethics in Science and New Technologies and Member of the ALLEA Working Group on the ERA), and Karen Yeung (Professor at the University of Birmingham), moderated by Nausikaä El-Mecky (Professor in History of Art & Visual Culture at Universitat Pompeu Fabra, Barcelona)
