PUBLIC SYMPOSIUM

ALLEA is celebrating its 30th anniversary at the 2024 General Assembly in Berlin, Germany, co-hosted by its German member academies. A public symposium, titled ‘European Research Collaboration in a Shifting Geopolitical Landscape: How Open Can We Be?‘, will bring together prominent researchers, policymakers, and civil society representatives from across Europe to discuss the challenges of open research collaboration in a changing geopolitical context.

Since its inception in 1994, ALLEA has aimed to promote scientific collaboration between Eastern and Western Europe, fostering the exchange of ideas across borders and disciplines. However, recent geopolitical tensions and the emergence of new powers have raised questions about the limits of open research collaboration. ALLEA invites attendees to reflect on the transformative potential of scientific collaboration and on the challenges of keeping inclusive and open international cooperation in balance with legitimate security needs to protect research systems.
